Bollywood was very successful and was producing around 200 new titles a year when it really hit fame with it's first color film in Hindi ‘Kisan Kanya' in 1937, this film made bollywood history.
In the 1950's bollywood made some of it's most famous films like ‘Pyassa' (1957) and ‘Awaara' (1951). These two films really put Hindi movies on the map and were to become great classics that are still popular today. When we think of bollywood movies we think of vibrant colors, lively music and deeply cultural dance routines which have taken the western world by storm through sheer force of energy.
The latest bollywood films to make it large on the screen include titles such as ‘Dulha Mil Gaya' which stars Fardeen Khan, ‘Shaapit' which stars Aditya Narayan, ‘Ravaan' which stars Abhishek Bachchan, ‘Mallika' which stars Sheena Nayar and ‘Dabangg' which stars Salman Khan. These are just some of the latest Hindi releases which have come out in 2010 but the list is large and should definitely be looked over.
There are some bollywood films set to be released later this year that have great anticipation surrounding them. There is the comedy ‘Do Dooni Charr' starring Rishi Kapoor to be released on the 8th of October. The romance ‘Guzaarish' starring Hrithik Roshan to be released on the 19th of November and a thriller movie ‘No One Killed Jessica' starring Vidya Balan which will be released on the 10th of December. There are many more titles not mentioned which are being eagerly awaited for, and with so much success and rich theatre it is no wonder bollywood films are so popular.
There is also bollywood entertainment for children such as ‘Bumm Bumm Bole' which stars Darsheel Safary and ‘The camp' which stars Sonali Kulkarni. What is so fantastic about these bollywood films is that adults seem to enjoy them just as much as the children. They are really rich family entertainment and they carry on the bright and wondrous tradition of bollywood film.
If you are not a steadfast bollywood fan and have a cliché stuck in your mind about loud and purely comedic Indian dancing you should perhaps clear your mind. A lot of people unfamiliar with bollywood films seem to assume that they are all comedies but there are actually more romance, thriller, action and drama films than comedy and these films most certainly are not cliché, they are rich and imaginative, moving and surprising. It is the westerners who seem to be the cliché ones, popping a label on a culture's film industry without really delving into it and embracing the beauty of some truly memorable Hindi cinema.
